A Day to Stay Indoors: Toronto Under Winter Storm Warning
The Greater Toronto Area (GTA) is bracing for a wintry mix of snow, freezing rain, and ice pellets, prompting Environment Canada to issue a yellow winter storm warning. The low-pressure system could bring up to 5 cm of snow and ice pellets, creating hazardous travel conditions. Mark Schuster, an operational meteorologist with Environment Canada, warns that the worst of the conditions will likely occur during the morning rush hour, with temperatures near the freezing mark.
Schuster advises, "If you don't have to travel today, it's a good day to just stay at home. But if you do have to travel, give yourself extra time and be cautious." The city of Toronto has taken proactive measures, including salting expressways and local roads, and keeping four warming centers open for those affected by the weather.
Schools in the GTA will remain open, but school buses will be canceled due to weather-related delays. The Toronto District School Board and Toronto Catholic District School Board have made these arrangements. The Peel District School Board and Halton District School Board have also canceled all bus services for all zones, while the Durham Student Transportation Services has canceled all transportation due to inclement weather.
Metrolinx, the agency responsible for GO Transit and UP Express, has warned of potential delays and disruptions to train services. Commuters are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys. The University of Toronto is monitoring the situation and will provide updates by noon.
The weather has caught some off guard, like Zan Munawar, who was walking in the rain along Dundas Street W. "It's quite intense and different," he said. "At least it's not freezing cold as it was a couple of weeks ago."
The Ontario Provincial Police have reminded drivers to adjust their speed and be cautious on slippery and icy roads. The City of Vaughan has also issued a significant weather event warning for 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
