But here's where it gets controversial: the US has sanctioned this tanker for its alleged links to Iranian oil, viewing it as part of a clandestine network that transports oil from sanctioned nations.
When US officials attempted to board the ship, it kept sailing, leading to an active pursuit. An anonymous US official confirmed that this operation is part of a broader crackdown on Venezuela's oil industry, which the Trump administration sees as a key lever to pressure Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro.
And this is the part most people miss: the US isn't just targeting Venezuelan oil; it's also going after tankers linked to Iran, a country with its own complex relationship with the US.
The pursuit of Bella 1 is just the latest in a series of actions by the US to interdict tankers tied to Venezuelan oil. On the same day, the US Coast Guard intercepted another tanker, the Centuries, in international waters off Venezuela's coast. A White House spokeswoman, Anna Kelly, confirmed that the tanker was carrying sanctioned Venezuelan oil, even though the ship itself wasn't on the sanctioned vessels list.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem released a video of the operation, showcasing the Coast Guard's predawn action with support from the Defense Department. She emphasized the US's commitment to combating the illicit movement of sanctioned oil, which she claims funds narco-terrorism in the region.
But is this really about combating drug trafficking, or is it a veiled attempt to exert control over Venezuela's vast oil reserves?
These actions mark an escalation in Washington's efforts to squeeze Maduro, whom Trump accuses of flooding the US with illicit drugs and migrants. Last week, Trump ordered a complete blockade of sanctioned tankers going in and out of Venezuela, effectively cutting off Caracas' main economic lifeline.
Venezuela, sitting on the world's largest proven oil reserves, has seen its output plummet due to international sanctions. Trump's interest in the country's oil is well-documented, and he accuses Venezuela of 'stealing' American property through its state takeover of the industry in the 1970s.
Before that, American firms were actively drilling in Venezuela. Now, only one US firm, Chevron, operates there. Most of Venezuela's oil is sold to China, and US officials have previously stated that the cargos aboard the Skipper and Centuries were ultimately destined for Asia.
Venezuela has strongly condemned the blockade, calling it a reckless and serious threat to its sovereignty and national interests. After the seizure of the Centuries, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez issued a statement, denouncing the theft and hijacking of private vessels transporting Venezuelan oil and promising to take appropriate actions, including reporting to the UN Security Council and other multilateral organizations.
