He urged Ukraine's partners to exert greater pressure on Moscow, emphasizing the need for tangible progress towards peace and an end to the war. The talks also addressed the issue of a potential prisoner exchange between the two nations. However, amidst the talks, Russian forces struck a crowded market in eastern Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to 15, as reported by the Donetsk region Governor Vadym Filashkin. The three delegations, including US officials, including special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, sat around a U-shaped table. According to Mr. Zelenskyy, approximately 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in the conflict since Russia's invasion. Despite the efforts, significant differences persist on critical issues, such as Russia's demands for Ukraine to cede controlled territories and the fate of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, Europe's largest, situated in a Russian-occupied area. Moscow insists on Ukraine's withdrawal from the entire Donetsk region, including heavily fortified cities, as a prerequisite for any agreement. The Kremlin has stated that Russian troops will continue their fight until Ukraine makes 'decisions' to end the war. Ukraine, however, advocates for a conflict freeze along current front lines and rejects any unilateral withdrawal of its forces. Russia currently occupies approximately 20% of Ukraine's territory, including Crimea and parts of the Donbas region seized before the 2022 invasion.
