In a bold statement that underscores the escalating tensions, Donald Trump expressed that it would be ideal for the United States to refrain from resorting to military action against Iran. He emphasized that he has outlined two crucial requirements for Iran to avoid such a confrontation: first, they must abandon their nuclear ambitions, and second, they need to halt the violent suppression of protesters—a situation he described as resulting in thousands of deaths.
"We have dispatched numerous powerful naval vessels towards Iran, and I sincerely hope that we do not have to utilize them," Trump remarked. This declaration comes amid increasing pressure on Iran to engage in negotiations regarding its nuclear program.
Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, responded by asserting that their armed forces are prepared to swiftly and decisively react to any acts of aggression, highlighting the seriousness of the situation.
During the premiere of a documentary featuring his wife Melania, Trump reiterated his stance on social media, stating, "I hope Iran will quickly come to the negotiating table to establish a fair deal—specifically, one that ensures NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS."
He also warned of a "massive armada approaching Iran," stressing that it is "ready, willing, and able to act with speed and force if necessary."
Araghchi countered by saying that Iran is open to a fair and mutually beneficial nuclear agreement based on equality and free from intimidation, aiming to guarantee Iran's right to peaceful nuclear technology while ensuring that nuclear weapons do not factor into their security strategies. "We have never sought such weapons, as they hold no value in our security considerations," he stated.
Meanwhile, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, clarified that there were currently no negotiations taking place with the United States, even though there have been some exchanges of messages.
Earlier this month, Trump had mentioned that the U.S. would intervene to protect Iranian protesters should authorities use violence against them. Protests erupted in late December following a significant devaluation of the Iranian currency, quickly escalating into a broader challenge to the legitimacy of the clerical regime in Iran.
Residents of Tehran have reported that the government’s crackdown on dissent has been unprecedented in its severity. Despite initially promising that "help is on the way," Trump later indicated that he had received credible information suggesting that executions of protesters had ceased.
According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (Hrana), at least 6,479 individuals have been confirmed killed since the outbreak of protests, including 6,092 protesters, 118 children, and 214 government affiliates. They are also investigating approximately 17,000 additional reported fatalities.
On the Iranian side, authorities claimed over 3,100 deaths, mainly among security personnel or innocent bystanders targeted by what they termed "rioters."
In response to the ongoing violence, the European Union recently designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization and imposed new sanctions on six entities and 15 individuals within Iran.
