A bold new vision for Arnold Palmer Regional Airport is taking shape with the appointment of Maurice "Moe" Haas as the new executive director of the Westmoreland County Airport Authority. Haas, a seasoned airport veteran with 35 years of experience, aims to boost airline traffic and enhance the passenger experience through a $24 million terminal expansion project.
But here's where it gets controversial: Haas steps into this role at a time when the airport is actively courting new airlines, with video discussions already underway. And this is the part most people miss: the airport's current sole commercial carrier, Spirit Airlines, is facing financial challenges, leaving room for potential new entrants.
"We're going to try to maintain or increase airline traffic," Haas said, acknowledging the challenge of filling the big shoes left by his predecessor, Gabe Monzo. Monzo, who has served as executive director since 2008, recommended Haas as his successor, and Haas hopes to continue Monzo's legacy while adding his own unique touch.
The expansion project, currently in its first phase, aims to create more seating space for passengers and provide additional room for TSA agents. Two new gates will allow for simultaneous service to passengers, a significant upgrade.
"We're excited about the potential this expansion brings," Haas said. "It's a great opportunity to showcase our airport's capabilities and attract new airlines."
And the airport is already taking steps to make that happen. Volaire Aviation Consultants and airport personnel have been in talks with five airlines since December, including Spirit Airlines. Marketing briefs have been exchanged, and the airport is actively pursuing new partnerships.
