India's new air defense system, Akash-NG, is a game-changer in the region's security landscape. With its rapid response capabilities, this fully domestic missile system can intercept hostile aerial threats within seconds, raising questions about its potential impact on the ongoing tensions with Pakistan.
But here's where it gets controversial: Can Akash-NG really protect Indian cities from surprise attacks? And how does it fit into India's larger defense strategy against Pakistan's air assets?
We sat down with Lt Col JS Sodhi (Retd) to unravel the mysteries surrounding this indigenous missile system.
Akash-NG: India's Aerial Guardian
Akash-NG, India's latest surface-to-air missile (SAM), is designed to safeguard the skies from hostile aerial intruders. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) under the 'Make in India' initiative, this system boasts an impressive interception range, reportedly engaging targets at around 70-80 km, a significant improvement over its predecessors.
With its dual-pulse solid rocket motor, active radar seeker, and advanced command systems, Akash-NG can locate, track, and destroy aerial threats in any weather condition. Its mobility allows for quick deployment, making it a versatile asset in India's air defense network.
Intercepting Threats: Fighter Jets and Missiles
Lt Col Sodhi emphasizes that Akash-NG is an integral part of India's integrated air defense network, designed for aerial interception. Its improved range and precision enable it to engage high-speed targets like fighter jets and cruise missiles before they penetrate deep into Indian airspace.
However, successful interception relies not only on the missile but also on early detection, tracking, and coordination with radar and command systems. The entire network must operate in harmony to ensure effective airspace security.
Protecting Border Cities
Akash-NG is a component of a layered, nationwide air defense system, contributing to the protection of western border areas, including cities like Amritsar and Jaisalmer. These systems are strategically positioned and can be relocated as needed, working in conjunction with other radars and weapon systems to create a robust defense.
While no single battery can provide full protection, Akash-NG, as part of the integrated network, enhances overall coverage and response against aircraft or missiles approaching from Pakistan.
Surprise Attacks: Drones and Cruise Missiles
Lt Col Sodhi explains that Akash-NG can technically intercept a wide range of aerial objects, including drones and low-flying craft. However, due to the high cost per missile, the system is prioritized for larger, high-signature threats like fighter aircraft and bigger cruise missiles.
For smaller drones or low-signature targets, dedicated lower-cost defense systems may be more suitable. Nonetheless, Akash-NG's advanced radars and seekers give it the capability to detect and engage these threats when necessary, especially in high-intensity scenarios.
Rapid Response to Aerial Strikes
India's air defense network is always on high alert, even during peacetime. Lt Col Sodhi reveals that the moment a foreign object is detected approaching Indian airspace, countermeasures are activated within seconds. Akash-NG, with its quick reaction time, can fire a missile within 10 seconds of target acquisition and launch a salvo of three in about 20 seconds.
This rapid response capability ensures India can effectively counter sudden aerial threats, such as surprise strikes from Pakistan.
Reducing Dependence on Foreign Systems
Akash-NG is largely indigenously designed and manufactured, with very few foreign components. Lt Col Sodhi highlights that this reduces India's reliance on foreign-made systems, such as Russia's S-400. By producing advanced air defense missiles domestically, India gains strategic autonomy and easier logistics, especially in prolonged conflicts.
While India will continue to operate a mix of systems, including some imported ones, Akash-NG strengthens India's self-sufficiency and decreases its dependency on defense imports, adding confidence to its indigenous defense infrastructure.
Deployment and Coverage
Akash-NG and other air defense assets are dispersed across the country, integrated into a nationwide network. They can be positioned nearer the Line of Control if required, but deployment decisions are based on the overall defense plan.
Akash-NG's strength lies in its integration with early-warning radars and command control, whether deployed near the LoC or deeper in strategic areas. It functions as part of a layered air defense belt, enhancing overall coverage and response.
Multi-Target Capability
Akash-NG is designed with the ability to track and engage up to ten targets simultaneously. This capability is crucial in large-scale conflicts, where a single enemy strike may involve multiple threats. Effective engagement, however, relies on the integrated air defense network, including linked radar systems and command control.
Strategic Balance and Deterrence
Lt Col Sodhi asserts that India maintains military superiority over Pakistan and that Akash-NG further strengthens India's defense. While no single system can entirely shift the strategic balance, the addition of a modern medium-range air defense missile enhances deterrence and complicates an adversary's air operations planning.
Against Pakistan's air assets, Akash-NG adds another layer of defense, making India's airspace more challenging to penetrate. Combined with other systems and early warning networks, it reinforces India's existing advantage.
