Embark on a journey to the extremes with astrobiologist Dale Andersen and his team as they venture into the Antarctic wilderness. Their mission? To unlock the secrets of life beyond our planet.
Unveiling the Mysteries of Lake Untersee
Dale Andersen and his dedicated crew have embarked on a snowmobile expedition from the Ultima ice airstrip to their research base at Lake Untersee. With their Starlink system now operational, they've shared incredible imagery and a captivating video, offering a glimpse into their remote world.
But why do they choose this challenging location year after year? Dale explains, "Lake Untersee is a harsh environment, but we're driven by a thirst for knowledge. We seek insights into Earth's past and future, and our research guides the search for life on distant planets like Mars and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn."
Here's a collection of stunning pictures sent directly from the Lake Untersee Base Camp via Starlink:
The Journey Continues
Dale Andersen, an esteemed astrobiologist, is back in Antarctica at Lake Untersee for another research season in January-February 2026. This is a continuation of his annual expeditions, a tradition that began in 1996 when he and Keith Cowing first started sharing research updates from the icy continent. In fact, they believe they were the first to update a webserver from Antarctica, located in Keith's old condo.
Dale Andersen's impressive resume includes being a Fellow of the Explorers Club, a former NASA Space Station Payload manager and space biologist, a journalist, and a veteran of Devon Island and Everest Base Camp. He identifies as a synaesthete and describes himself as a mix of Na'Vi, Jedi, Freman, and Buddhist, with a touch of ASL (American Sign Language).

And a Fun Fact: Dale Andersen is holding an International Space Station Crew 11 patch. His friend and fellow biologist, astronaut Zena Cardman, had planned an exciting Antarctica-space conversation, but the crew's early return put a pause on that.
But here's where it gets controversial... What do you think about the potential for life on other planets? And how does Dale's research contribute to this ongoing debate? Share your thoughts in the comments!
