Brexit Betrayal? UK-EU Trade Deal Talks: Customs Union & Single Market (2026)

A significant shift in the Brexit narrative may be unfolding as Brussels expresses a willingness to explore a new trade agreement with the UK.

In a recent statement, Valdis Dombrovskis, the European Commissioner for Finance, indicated that the European Union is "open-minded" about discussing the possibility of a customs union with Britain. This revelation came after a series of trade negotiations that involved key figures such as Chancellor Rachel Reeves. When asked whether the EU would be receptive to conversations about the UK potentially rejoining the customs union, Dombrovskis told the BBC, "I cannot jump to conclusions, but I can say that we are ready to engage with an open mind and seek those areas of cooperation."

Dombrovskis further mentioned that the EU is also willing to consider discussions surrounding various aspects of the single market. This announcement follows a meeting hosted by Chancellor Reeves at 11 Downing Street, which included Dombrovskis and Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commissioner for Trade, along with cabinet ministers Peter Kyle and Nick Thomas-Symonds.

However, this development has ignited fresh accusations from members of the Conservative Party, who claim it represents a betrayal of the Brexit mandate. Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel criticized Labour leader Keir Starmer, asserting that his government is attempting to re-enter the EU through backdoor negotiations. She stated, "Labour is desperate for someone or something to blame for their economic incompetence, and they are pointing fingers at Brexit while trying to reopen old wounds."

Patel emphasized that it is not Brexit that has undermined the economy but rather the policies of the current Labour Government, insisting that only the Conservatives are focused on addressing the country's pressing challenges and revitalizing the economy.

While Prime Minister has dismissed the idea of rejoining the EU's customs union, he has suggested that future negotiations should consider aligning with the single market as a viable option.

This discussion coincides with the launch of the Daily Express's "Give Us a Proper Brexit" campaign, which marks the upcoming 10th anniversary of the Brexit referendum. The campaign advocates for the UK to withdraw from the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), reduce bureaucratic obstacles for businesses, and establish a 12-mile exclusion zone solely for British fishing vessels.
